Martinique's Carnival 2025 is an explosion of colors, music, and traditions. More than just a celebration, it embodies the soul of the island, immersing participants in a unique festive and historical experience.

A Tradition Rooted in History
Dating back to the 18th century, Martinique's Carnival has its roots in a time marked by slavery. It served as a space for expression and satire, allowing enslaved people to caricature their oppressors and celebrate their culture. Today, this tradition lives on, evolving into a vibrant celebration that reflects the richness and resilience of the Martinican people.

Dates and Highlights of Carnival 2025
Martinique's Carnival will take place from March 1st to March 5th, 2025, offering a full immersion into one of the biggest celebrations in the Caribbean.
Key Moments:
🔹 Saturday, March 1st: The Carnival Queens’ Parade!
The first day of the festivities, known as "Jour Gras," features the Carnival Queens from all over Martinique parading through the streets of Fort-de-France, dazzling the cheering crowd with their stunning costumes.
🔹 Sunday, March 2nd: The Arrival of Vaval, King of Carnival!
King Vaval, the central figure of Carnival, makes his grand entrance in an electrifying atmosphere. A satirical representation of current events, his identity remains a mystery until his parade. The streets come alive with walking bands, street orchestras, and the famous bradjaks—old cars transformed with bright colors and bold slogans. A true explosion of creativity and satire!
🔹Monday, March 3rd: The Burlesque Weddings!
"Lundi Gras" is highlighted by the Mariages Burlesques, where men dress as brides and women as grooms. This humorous tradition playfully mocks the institution of marriage, featuring outrageous and comical couples that entertain the crowd with laughter and delight.
🔹Tuesday, March 4th: The Red Devils Take Over!
On this day, the streets are filled with the Diables Rouges, the Red Devils, known for their striking costumes and energetic performances. These vibrant figures embody the wild, mischievous spirit of the Carnival, adding to the excitement and intensity of the celebration.
Wednesday, March 5th: The Emotional Farewell in Black and White
On the final day of Carnival, revelers dress in black and white to bid farewell to Vaval in a solemn procession. The King of Carnival is then symbolically burned, marking the end of the festivities. The pleureuses, often played by men in women's attire, add a dramatic touch to this closing ritual.
The Iconic Costumes of Carnival
Each day of Martinique's Carnival is marked by legendary characters:
🔹 Les Diables Rouges : Impressive with their horns and flamboyant masks.
🔹 Les Mariane Lapo Fig: Dressed in dried banana leaves.
🔹 Les Nèg Gwo Siwo: Covered in molasses and charcoal, they symbolize the resistance of runaway slaves. They also had the role of clearing the crowds to allow their group to pass, as no one wanted to get dirty.
🔹 The Mariages Burlesques: Men in bridal gowns and women in groom's costumes, humorously reversing roles.
🔹 Les Malprop: Exaggerated cross-dressers, embodying social satire.
🔹 The Hommes d'Argile / Clay Men: Living statues covered in clay.
How to Dress for Martinique’s Carnival?
Martinique's Carnival is, above all, a participatory and inclusive celebration, where the key is to let yourself be swept away by the festive atmosphere and the captivating rhythms of the walking bands. Here are some tips to fully enjoy this colorful event:
Follow the colors of the day: Embrace the Carnival color codes by at least wearing the emblematic colors: red on Mardi Gras and black and white on Ash Wednesday. This will help you blend in with the crowd. You can also draw inspiration from the iconic costumes for each day as detailed above.
Join the Vidé en Pyjama: If you're an early riser (or perhaps a late-night owl!), make sure to wear a comfortable, or not-so-comfortable, but especially original, pajama for the vidé en pyjama at 4 AM. The one in Lamentin is especially famous for its unique atmosphere. A traditional breakfast concludes the vidé, or you can enjoy a Creole breakfast basket at your return to Domaine de l'Anse Ramier!
Let your creativity shine: Dare to be original and humorous! Martinique's Carnival is a true outlet for expression, where freedom of speech reigns. Extravagant costumes, fun accessories, or outfits you would never dare wear anywhere else—everything is allowed, as long as good vibes are present.
Nothing to wear? If you arrive without a costume – Pa ni problem! The “pacotilleuses” offer masks and accessories throughout the streets.
